Ikuru is an ethical fashion label based in Pemba, Mozambique that works with beautiful African prints and textiles for each of their designs. Founded in 2014 as a social enterprise, Ikuru empowers women from vulnerable backgrounds through investment in professional training, job creation and by providing social and health benefits through work. Ikuru believe that providing fair work opportunities and benefits not only profit the women, but their communities as well.
Ikuru designs blend the colorful fabrics that play such an intrinsic role in the lives of women across Africa, with a modern sense of styling, to create two women’s collections; the prêt-a-porter, and a Designer collection. In addition to designing and making womenswear, Ikuru also produce fun and playful kids’ and men’s lines. By fusing African prints with Western styling, ikuru hope to bridge both worlds, and connect them through beautiful handmade clothing, each piece signed by the seamstress who made it.
The small team that make up Ikuru have big dreams. The meaning of is “strength” in the local Mozambique language, and the project hopes to empower women through fashion. The Ikuru team is made up of fantastic seamstresses, two tailors, trainees, a manager, an adviser, a social media intern, the founder, a sales assistant, a mentor, a photographer, volunteer designers, customers, friends, family, inspirers, supporters and more.
